Anatomy of a NASCAR

Windshield glass
It's not glass, but a type of plastic known as Lexan. Similar to windows in an airplane, it's lighter and tougher to break than glass. For added support, there is a roll bar on each side of the windshield. An extra bar of reinforcement has been mandated for the center of the windshield since Dale Earnhardt's violent crash at Talladega, Ala., in 1996 to keep large pieces of debris from flying into the car.
